tldr: if you haven't played trails in the sky fc yet, buy that for steam or psp and then buy trails in the sky sc because it's finally out in english!!

HOW CONVENIENT SO non tldr:
as someone who's played every game in the trails/kiseki series i can easily say that this is my favorite series of all time out of any media
here's the breakdown: 7 games out so far that all take place on the same continent in different countries, and all the stories are connected (!!)
there is much political intrigue and so much world building, for example you talk to an npc and progress the story a bit? that same fucking npc has new dialogue to say and has his/her own little mini story going on wtf?? another example: stuff in the third game that you thought was interesting but pointless? WRONG it's foreshadowing something that happens in the seventh game that was developed 6-7 years later wtf?? MINDBLOWING i've seen the trails series called the game of thrones of video games once, so interpret that as you will IN OTHER WORDS you want a game with a great story??? trails got it for u bro! these characters? they're so fucking REAL man, back when i played games 4-5 these characters became like a second family to me anyways i could gush about trails for my whole life without taking a breath so let's break it down some more
the first game in the trails series came out in english a while ago for psp/steam: trails in the sky fc (first chapter)
i'll admit it's a slow buildup, but the ending ruined my life in the best way possible MAN i still get chills thinking about it
the first game (tits fc) leads straight into the second game which was just released a few hours ago in english, trails in the sky sc (second chapter)
it was initially developed as one game but there was too much beautiful story so they split it into two ANYWAYS tits sc is commonly voted as the best game in the series by fans so it's a real treat, WHY ARE YOU NOT BUYING IT RIGHT NOW??? IT'S FINALLY IN ENGLISH?

the story between tits fc and tits sc resolves pretty nicely but the third game that follows after completes the "sora"/sky (??) trilogy that takes place in the same country (liberl)
the two games after, zero no kiseki and ao no kiseki (my personal favorite) take place in crossbell which is a precious second home to me, the localization of these games in english could happen if there's enough support SO BUY TITS SC!!! zero/ao have truly the most awesome story i've experienced in a game so please, you know you want to experience it too
the two games after zero/ao, trails of cold steel i and ii take place in the VERY IMPORTANT AND LONG AWAITED COUNTRY of erebonia, take place concurrently with zero/ao (which is really cool how the timelines match up like WHOA), and have been confirmed for english release later this year!! SO BUY THOSE TWO but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do yourself a favor and at least play tits fc/sc first because even though trails of cold steel was intended to be friendly to newcomers to the series there are still important things you will not understand if you don't play fc/sc first (ideally you play zero/ao before too but each game spoils things for the other so it's tricky)

the one bad thing about being in kiseki hell is that your expectations for jrpgs becomes higher, i can barely get through tales games' stories anymore... it's a little sad
anyways buy fc/sc and then buy cold steel i/ii for your ps3/vita later to support future trails releases including the all important ao no kiseki
i'm off to enjoy sc again in english and probably cry my eyes out when i reach THAT ONE POINT not to mention the ending bye
