This anime is probably one of the greatest series I've ever seen. Hell, it's one of the greatest things to ever bless my television screen, including non-anime. The episodes are constructed in a way that permits them to be fairly self-contained (although the multi-episode arcs are filled with so much awesome) but they still add some integral piece to the overall plot. Except the baseball episode.. that was... too much filler.
I never have been a fan of hiphop/rap styled music, but this anime somehow blends that with an Edo period setting to create a unique flavor unlike anything I've ever seen before. And unlike a handful of "unique flavors" that taste simply atrocious, this combonation is one of the most delectable things I've ever consumed.
The characters are so deep and complex, yet so simple. I was constantly surprised by Mugen, just when I thought I had him figured out he would do something the total opposite what I thought. Jin is a little more predictable, but still an excellent character. Even Fuu, who plays the useless female lead, is an enjoyable character (and not just because she's pretty.) This is one of the few shows where all the main characters provide an entertaining and likeable aspect to the show, and limiting to them to only three provides a nice sense of balance.
My one complaint with the series would be the excessive amount of loose-ends it leaves after it concludes. There are several one or two episode characters met throughout the series, and you know that they'll cross blades with our heroes again, but this is never shown. There's plenty of room for a second season if they wanted to tie up these endings, but I don't think that's going to happen. Oh well.
It's a really good series, and I encourage anybody who hasn't seen it yet to check it out... This wasn't meant to be a review, but I guess it turned into one... Maybe I'll do a more indepth review of the series at a later date.
