Upon the quick rustle of bushes, Kysho's ears perked up, and panic rushed through him. He didn't bother turning around yet, and concentrated first on the recently stolen loot before him, feeling the hot stare burning into the back of his head. "What in the world are you doing?" he heard a voice ask, a definite tone of suspicion in it, but the brunette thief didn't reply yet.
Still kneeling, he hurriedly stuffed all his loot he was in the process of admiring back into his leather bag. There was just one item left, a golden necklace that shimmered from the light that peered through the tree canopies above. Kysho had recently swiped it from a bumbling old merchant the last town over, and was quite proud of it. Just as he stretched his gloved hand out for it, the wolf Niakru beat him to it, snatching it up in his glistening, white teeth.
Kysho's mouth immediately fell open in disgust as he glanced at the wolf, who seemed proud of his acquisition. Kysho turned to face Vierka, standing to his feet with a huff. With his left hand holding his open bag at his side, he pointed accusingly at Niakru with the other. "Make that thing give it back, now."
"...Did you steal all of that?" was the blunt response the thief received, and Vierka suddenly looked quite angry and threatening.
He took it she didn't like thieves, and the bag he held full of trinkets and gold was a sure giveaway to his 'profession'. Kysho felt himself starting to sweat nervously, and scratched the back of his head in thought. There had to be some way he could worm out of this one.
"Uh... Of course not," he replied smoothly, starting his lie. "You see, my grandfather lives in the city that's really close to here. He owned this huge shop and sold lots of stuff. This stuff here, actually, you know what I mean? He was a very humble old guy, but he never did get along well with my grandmother. She lives in the other city in the other direction, and sells stuff over there. They've lived separate lives for a while.
"Sadly, my grandfather died last week. Old age, you know? And his dying wish was for me to take all his merchandise and give it to my grandmother. That way she can sell it all herself and make a better living, you know what I'm talking about?"
Noting that the half-elf was completely immersed in his story and nodding with his every word, he took it that she was actually buying this. "So here I am," Kysho continued, giving a grand sigh for effect. "I'm taking this fancy stuff all to my grandmother now. So I really need your wolf there to give that necklace back, otherwise I'd never feel like I fulfilled my grandfather's last request..."
"Of course," Vierka answered, still nodding sagely. "I hope your grandmother does okay." She knelt down to Niakru and held her hand out expectantly, waiting for the wolf to spit out the necklace. "Give that back now please," she goaded, receiving a low growl. Kysho noted the wolf's eyes, how they seemed distrustful, and began to wonder if the wolf actually understood what he was talking about - knew that he was lying. He gulped, dismissing the thought.
Niakru gave Kysho one last beady stare before gently letting go of the necklace. Vierka stood back up and held it out to Kysho, a smile on her face, which made Kysho suddenly feel guilty. "Take care the rest of your way to your grandmother's."
"...Right," Kysho muttered, dropping the necklace into the bag, pulling it shut, and tying it around his belt. "Uh, thanks." He quickly started off down the path in a brisk walk that quickly morphed into a frantic sprint. That was a close one.
