I guess the humor is a little messed up(read: very) messed up sometimes, but I find it funny how the guy basically makes fun of Japanese society.

Ok, I finally decided to get off my lazy ass and answer your question. And by answer your question, I mean I decided to copypasta the description from Anime News Network.

Itoshiki Nozomu is the world's most negative person. To his way of thinking, there is no hope or meaning in this existence. Even the three kanji of his name become the two-kanji word zetsubou, "despair", when compressed. What an ironic twist of fate, then, that he becomes teacher to a class containing his precise opposite, the invincibly positive-minded Fuura Kafuka.

Basically, he teaches a class filled with girls who have major issues. Like one is a hikikomori, one loves to pull the tails of animals, one only communicates through texting, etc.
It basically makes fun of Japanese society, and my Japanese friend says it's "so true."
Also I'm surprised how much the teacher tries to hang himself.
