a.k.a. Fire Emblem 4
a.k.a. Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu
When I was playing 6-10 and creeping on their gamefaqs pages and whatnot there were always people saying how FE4 is better, FE4 is the best FE, blah blah blah...
So I finally buckled down to try it out.
And I agree with them. This is the best FE game I've played out of 6-10 (and Shadow Dragon but it's not very hard to be better than Shadow Dragon)
English patch here: darktwilkitri.thegreatbeyond.net/dtntd_fireemblem4.php
I personally use zsnes to play it, but that other snes emu that I can't be bothered to find the name of can work too.
Obtain game, paste patch into folder with game, rename patch to same name as game, run, ?????, profit, ect.
The story is surprisingly good.
The big differences between this FE and the newer ones:
-There are only 12 chapters. D: But that's because...
-The maps are huge. Like HUGE. YOU DON'T KNOW HOW HUGE UNTIL YOU PLAY THE GAME. THESE MAPS ARE HUGE. Since the maps are HUGE one chapter can take a really long time, like I've been playing chapter 3 since 2 in the afternoon and it's 10 at night now. (That also might just be because I keep reloading my save to abuse the rng in this chapter, but a chapter usually still takes around 3-4 hours) SERIOUSLY THESE MAPS ARE HUGE. But now that I've been screaming (capslocking?) that at you, it won't be so overwhelming anymore. Now they won't seem so huge. :D
-There are two parts to this game: generation 1 (prologue-chapter 5) and generation 2 (chapter 6-11). You pair characters from generation 1 together (like supports from the other games) and get to play as their kids in generation 2. You can pair any girl with any guy (some pairings are "predestined" though) so there's a lot of replay value in this game. (The kids are the same kids either way unless you don't pair some people together and get replacement characters. But the stats/growths/skills that are passed down are what changes, so there are a ton of possibilities for developing your kids.) (Also I think I got this right, I'm not at generation 2 yet but this is what I've put together from what I've read)
Holy crap while typing this my Levin just killed 10 pirates without getting hit once. Uh, anyways.
-You don't lose your unit if they die in the arena, but you can only use the arena 7 times each chapter for each character. Which is fine. If you're going to play it (which you should) use the arena whenever you can!
-You can deploy every unit you have at the same time, but as a result there are fewer characters in this game.
-Not really something new, but this is the game that introduced skills to the FE series. They took them out for some reason before bringing them back for FE9 and 10. To go along with this, the way that you get a double hit in this game is through a skill called pursuit. Use everyone who has pursuit. ಠ_ಠ (Except maybe Alec unless your Alec is seriously blessed)
-No vulneraries! No elixirs! Ahh! D: That's alright though.
-There's no con stat. (This is big. It makes axes and fire magic blech.)
-Some characters have holy blood, which lets them use holy weapons (which are awesome) and gives bonuses to stat growth. Holy blood can be passed down from gen 1 to gen 2 which gives more possibilities for developing children. Holsety blood and weapons are super awesome.
-I've only promoted one unit so far, but I believe that after promoting at level 20, your character's level doesn't reset but is capped at level 30? I think. (Also the HP cap is 80 for every class! o_o)
There's probably more later but seeing as I'm only on chapter 3...
After this one I'm planning on playing Thracia 776 (FE5), which is said to be the hardest FE other than FE7HHM. It's a side story to FE4 and the lord in it (Leaf) is the kid of two of the chars from this game. It's also the rascal that introduced fog of war.
:|
FE5 also has a fatigue system that makes you use more different characters.
ANYWAYS SORRY IT'S SO LONG. I JUST GET FIRED UP ABOUT THIS GAME.
HAHA I'M PUNNY.
TL;DR: if you like Fire Emblem you owe it to yourself to play FE4.
